xgen – how to rename modifiers in maya

Usually when working in groomings that require lots of modifiers for different parts, is hard to keep track of what modifier was used for what hair feature if not named correctly.
Maya doesn’t allow to change the name through the interface, but don’t loose hope! there is a way!

There is a correlation between the interface names and their xgen ascii file, and the xgen folder structure.

Backup your whole maya project before start! a mishap when changing xgen external files manually can be apocalyptic for your files.

If this example, I have a mixture of modifiers that require a folder and modifiers that don’t. The rule is simple: if the mod needs a ptx file (texture) or a xuv (points), it will have a folder structure to store it.

Now search the FXModules, and under them you should see a line called name. Rename those to something that makes sense for you and your modifier
